Well I got to work in good time depsite getting lost, and I have had to leave the bike at work as my right knee is sore and swollen, a minor setback, but we should be ok after a few days rest.
Later this week we will be adding a button for you to click and make a donation to Demelza, its a very secure and trusted company that are handling it. This has proved neccessary as I have had lots of enquiries as to how to make donation. In the next 2 weeks BRFM will be putting out a press release about our efforts in our broadcast area, and there will be links to here from the BRFM website.... Apparently they want pics of Lee and I on the bikes riding, now do I go with the skin tight lycra or the baggy stuff?
We will be selling the shirts off our backs! We are looking for someone to sponsor the shirts we wear on the trip, £100 secures one of us wearing the shirt for the entire duration of the trip to Paris, so if anyone is intersted email me peterfinch93@btinternet.com.

It had to happen!

Anyone who knows me will know that from time to time my bike and I part company, well it has happened this morning, it was a bad start to the day when I discovered that Lee's bike had a rear puncture, so it was down to just me on my own, I had done a mile when I hit a little hole on the road, and came crashing off the bike, I hurt my left elbow, and its quite sore, but not cut... so I am going to relax for an hour or so and try again later!

The Moment of Truth for Simon

Simon has been set his challenge
The Challenge is simple, all he has to do is predict Sittingbourne FC's results for the next 6 weeks, now he has to get 3 out of 6, easy you think? no. he has to get the precise score, for next weeks game, after taking advice from Brickies Legendary all rounder John Pitts, he has plumped for Sittingbourne to beat Kingstonian 2-1, now I dont fancy his chances on getting the required 3 results. The forfeit is straightforward, he will get to watch a Sittingbourne home game, simple I hear you say, ah yes, but he gets to enjoy the game from the comfort of a bath full of baked beans!!! in his Refs gear..... Poor Simon!

Thanks very much to Sittingbourne FC, who have let us have the Clubhouse for Friday April 20th for our quiz night, to raise funds for Demelza House, we popped into the club before the show, met the Chairman and had the pleasure of a great cup of tea made by John 'The Leg end' Pitts wife. The burgers were excellent and we managed to see 10 minutes of the game as well, and found a great spot to put the bath for Simon to watch the game. More details of the quiz night will be posted here soon, and I have to get a pic of Lee and myself on the bikes for a press release that BRFM are putting together.

The show went well, we spoke to John Owens who did the London to Paris last year, gawd now I am worried! Loads of technical problems, the internet connection vanished.... but we were sustained on a diet of scotch eggs and Jammie Rings....

Lee and I are off for a ride tomorrow, will post some pics when we get back.

Meet Lee - And John Owens Speaks! oh dear what have got ourselves into???

This is young Mr Lee Travers, who stupidly has agreed to join me on the ride to Paris! Hopefully he will be posting some blogs here soon, we are off on a big ride Sunday and will take the camera....

I just spoke to John Owens, who did the race last year, he will be on air at around 4.15pm, and believe me he has terrified the life out of me during our brief chat this evening, well worth a listen.....

Right thats it for now, I am off to Erith Yacht Club for a wee nip of something nice with Mr Travers

Trains, Buses and Shank's Pony - My Journey to Work

Half and inch of snow and everything goes tits up! Due to the inability of Southeastern trains, it took me 4 hours to get to work this morning! I arrived at the platform at 7.15 am to discover the driver of the train out of his cab smoking a fag.... obviously a sign that the train was buggered. Stupidly I decided to get a bus....... i arrived at my desk at 11am to be greeted by my boss smiling because he travels 120 miles to work and was in well before me without any issues! Should have taken the bike....

22 January 2007

Bikes and guests

Well I am to be joined this weekend on a 30ish mile ride by young Mr Travers, we are heading off by train to the North Downs for a good old fashioned cramp inducing ride.... Should be good, need to make a few adjustments to the bike and we will be ready.
Just got some news, on the show this coming Saturday we will have John Owens, who he? I hear you ask, well last year he took part in the London to Paris ride, and will be on the latter part of the show to tell us exactly what to expect over the next few months and during the actual ride itself, frankly I suspect he will tell us how tough it really is. Oh well in for a penny.....

The Realisation!

I went out on the bike this morning, it dawned on me that I will have to ride for around 5 hours a day come June, the longest leg is 88 miles, thats a horribly long way. The bike feels very comfortable, it has a good suspension, and feels very smooth, my only concern is the saddle seems to cause issues in certain areas, bearing in mind my pre-xmas surgery, this may have to be looked at very seriously in the next few weeks.
I am going ot get myself some training gear, i can rule out Lycra! but have seen some bits in the local bike shop near work.
Now there appears to be a problem with the wireless computer thing.... it shows me the time but not my speed, I did calibrate it, will have to look through the manual again, it kept telling me 0mph, but i know i was moving!

Relegation Watch

Well blow me down with a wet kipper! Charlton have won there first away game in 15 months.... it caused chaos in the studio when Faye's goal went in, I was trying to cue the news jingle in on time as well as waiting for the final score, a very tense moment, our man at the game Jon Mc sounded over the moon when we got his match report. Onward and upwards, its Bolton next, who have just been hammered 5-1....

The Sports Show went international yesterday, My good friends in Denmark were listening, and sent a text asking for Jamarouqui (not sure of spelling), I was more than happy to oblige, There was also a first for me, I actually played Celine Dion...never happened before usually play ELO instead! something must be in the air! We had Simon E and young Dan helping us with the show yesterday, and we did enjoy watching Dave struggle with a few scorers names, the one's causing him grief are Agbonlahor and Vennegoor of Hesselink, as Vennegoor of Hesselink scored a hat-trick I felt it was important that we mention him a fair amount. Had a good chat with Dave about his dog challenge, and we felt that as Simon is helping out more and more with the show, it is only fair that he faces a challenge with a forfeit if he fails. Neither of us are to sure just yet what the challenge will be, but if you have any ideas let us know!

As you may know we have set Dave Williams the task of tipping 6 dogs to win in 6 weeks, failure means he does a parachute jump! well he started off every badly and then low and behold just like a London Bus,you wait for one and two come together... so Dave had 2 wins and was looking pretty smug when we left the studio today, but it takes a winless week for him to induce those nerves....
Out on the bike in the morning I think....
Yours in high spirits

Wireless Going On

Right I am going to attempt to fit my wireless bike computer!

This Saturday on the Show

Tune into the show this Saturday on 95.6fm or listen online at www.brfm.net
On this weeks show we have live match reports from Sittngbourne FC's trip away to league leaders Dulwich Hamlet, with the legend that is John Pitts.
Not sure who has got the short straw but someone will be at Portsmouth vs Charlton, and we will have all the latest scores up and down the country. This Saturday is the first week of Dave Williams 6 win dog challenge, over the next 6 weeks young Dave has to tip 6 winners, if he does, great! if he gets 5 or less the poor lad will be jumping out of an aircraft, and if he is a good lad we will let him have a parachute!
We will also have some great music, including Mika, Fratellis and the new Kaiser Chiefs song.
Cheers me dears

Quiz Night Venue

Many thanks to John Pitts and everyone at Sittingbourne FC, they have generously let us have free use of the Clubhouse for a quiz night, the date is to be confirmed in the near future, the only proviso is that we spend huge amounts of cash in the bar! I am sure we can do that. Thanks once again to Sittingbourne FC. More details will follow soon.

New Toy

I have just been out and purchased this all singing dancing bike computer, and its wireless! It will be able to tell me how far I have travelled and most importantly my speed. Now I just have to figure out how to fit the damn thing to the bike.

Last Nights Post

Now having read last nights post in the cold light of day, it shows striking similarities to my late step father, who from time to time would wander into the living room whilst we were watching Top of the Pops, just when Pans People were on, now he had a passionate hate of modern music, and used to turn the sound down to watch Bab's and the girls do their thing! Very strange.....

Fundraising
We have a fundraising idea, we want to take over a restaraunt on a quiet evening, have a set menu priced aroud £15 and charge £20, thus making £5 per head for Demelza, and with a raffle as well we could have a fun night and make a few bob for charity, anyone know of any restaraunts where we could do this?

MTV

Now it may be my age, I am not sure, but there are certain videos on MTV and VH1 that I enjoy and I have taken to watching them with the sound down (it gets in the way of my viewing and contains loud thumping type music), my current fav video is not a new one but Eric Prydz Call on me which is excellent and I really admire the way the young ladies move! very artistic, others I like are Shania Twain and Geri Haliwell's Calling which is just the bees knees, now i have never found the woman attractive but that video works for me! Please feel free to start a list in the comments section!
Fundraising News
We may have out first fundraising night being booked anytime now, it will be a quiz night, with me as your host! more details of where, when coming soon, so start putting your teams together.
This one will be close to the Isle of Sheppey, I also plan on organising one closer to home in the Plumstead/Woolwich areas.
Sponsorship forms will be with us very soon if you want one let me know and I will get one out to you as soon as they arrive.
Fantasy F1
In the links section there is a link to Junction 34, a website run by Ceri Jones from his luxurious retreat in South Wales, every year Ceri runs a Fantasy Formula 1 competition, its free to enter and a great laugh, last years winner was my 10 year old son, Daniel, and boy has he been letting me know about it, so keep an eye out for entry forms on www.junction34.com.
On your bike
I was planning to cycle to work Wednesday of this week, but I have to travel around London a fair bit that day for meetings, I will leave it til Thursday. Sunday will be the day for our long rides, if you fancy joining us drop us a line and we can arrange to meet.
Thats all for today as I have just noticed a 1970's Blondie video on VH1!!!!

I have just been told it might be a good idea to quit smoking... it does pose a few problems whilst cycling... fag ash being blown back in your face at high speed... ok may have to give this a go, although I have lost count of how many times I have tried to give up!!

Relegation Watch - and other stuff

Is this what Gareth Gates is doing?
Well thanks a lot to the lads for losing at the weekend, I have endured taunts from our office Palace fan! now if we somehow amaze everyone and stay up (unlikely I know, but we can dream) I will take great delight in discussing Bouncebackability with this nice young man....

Thanks to John Pitts and everyone at Sittingbourne FC, they have added this blog's link to their website to help with fundraising! top man our John, very multi talented, not only is he Club Secretary but he is also BRFM's man at all Brickies game's and has a reputation for disagreeing with just about every decision the officials seem to make against his beloved Brickies! not a match report goes by without John having a moan... visit their site http://www.sittingbournefc.co.uk/ there are loads of links to online shopping, and the club get a slice of what you spend, so have a look and use their links!

I am thinking of cycling to work later this week, I reckon we need to be travelling at around 15-18 mph during the ride in June to get each day done in a reasonable time, to allow us to A) recover B) receive any required medical treatment and most importantly C) sample the local wine!

Now during the show I have an co-presenter who helps me, our Gareth Gates lookalike, Dave Williams (see pic at the top of page) Dave does our dog racing tips, amongst other things, he is ok, but we have set him a challenge, over a 6 week period he needs to get at least 6 winners, if he fails he will be doing a parachute jump!!! we will will keep you in touch with how he is doing here or you can listen online 4-7pm every Saturday afternoon on www.brfm.net.
Cheers me Dears

We will be holding a few fundraising evenings before the trip so keep checking the blog for more details. You can also donate directly to Demelza by clicking on the donate link in the links box.
Demelza House is the only childrens residential hospice in South London, Kent and East Sussex providing services to life limited children. They are currently raising funds for their new project in Eltham. Please give generously.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog, first off a little bit about myself, I am 40 something, single Dad to a boy that gets more like me everyday. I work for a charity who pay me enough money to keep me soaked in Gin and fine Whisky! In my spare time I am a Radio Presenter, presenting a sports show, for a community station and soon moving into the world of Podcasting I am told.Like a fool a few weeks ago live on air I agreed to take part in a charity bike ride, all sounds quite simple, well the trouble is I am overweight, smoke too much, eat too much, drink too much, and once I realised exactly how far this charity bike ride was I had a mild panic, you see I thought it was about 30 miles or so, nice and gentle... but oh no I have agreed to cycle from London to Paris in 4 days covering 300 miles which by maths means arounf 70 miles a day! so this blog will track my progress as I train for the trip in June, it will also keep a track of my adventures in radio and other things including Relegation Watch, which as a Charlton fan I am becoming used to the idea of Championship footie next year. If you play your cards right I may even post some picces from training and some music for you to enjoy. I am riding 30 miles today so will post later and let you know how many times I fell off, how many cars I scratched, fags smoked during ride and all that sort of stuff.Cheers for reading Pete
